What Is the Difference Between Diesel Oil and Oil for Gas Engines?

Though both diesel engines and gasoline engines need oil changes, the oil for the two should not be mixed up, as the engines’ needs are very different. Diesel oil is equipped with extra detergent and anti-wear additives that help keep your diesel engine performing as it should for years to come. While modern diesel engines have catalytic converters capable of dealing with these agents, the same is not true for catalytic converters in gas engines. Of course, this also means that oil meant for gasoline-powered engines doesn’t have what your diesel engine needs to stay clean and prevent wear. Viscosity is another main difference. Getting the viscosity right is vital for any engine oil, and diesel oil generally has a higher viscosity than engine oil meant for gasoline engines. Using a lower-viscosity oil in your diesel engine means that the oil would drain away too quickly, not providing the needed protection for your engine.
